Job overview
The post involves working at the Grange University Hospital site and providing active medical input to patients admitted through the A&E department and Acute Medical Unit to the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit on ward B4. The post holder will be trained in the assessment and management of medical, psychological and social health of patients presenting to a Stroke Medical Intake.Ìý
ÌýThe appointee will be responsible to the Clinical Director who will be the post holders overall named Clinical Supervisor (CS) and will be expected to work closely with other medical teams based at the Grange University Hospital.
This post has become available after the Health Board opened the newly built Grange University Hospital. The new stroke model will be the centre of specialist and critical care and will be part of existing new stroke service redesign programme (SSRP), started in 2016 which involves centralisation of a 7 day hyper-acute stroke service.Ìý The post is within the department of Stroke medicine. The post is open to anyone with General Internal Medicine/ stroke interest. This post will be based at the Grange University Hospital where the post holder will be involved in the management of acute care of stroke patients. The Department has close links and cross cover arrangements with Care Of the Elderly (COTE).
Main duties of the job
The stroke team provides first line and comprehensive assessment of all suspected stroke patients. The service is supported by the front end stroke team which comprises of a consultant, specialty doctor or clinical fellow and clinical nurse specialist. The post holder will support management of step down stroke and stroke rehabilitation patients at C5East. The post holder will do the assessment of stroke patients needing comprehensive work up under close supervision of Consultants.
The stroke ward at GUH has 15 HASU beds including 3 TIA beds. The three TIA beds can be occupied by the General medicine patients and will be looked after by the Stroke Physicians. The HASU is supported by extra nursing staff and therapists and there is a daily consultant ward round 7 days a week including bank holidays. The stroke patients are admitted to the stroke ward from A&E where they stay for 3 days and then are moved to a less acute/rehabilitation centre (NHH, RGH and Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr). The appointee will be based at ward B4, GUH and is required to cover other hospitals if required.
