Job overview

The Department of Microbiology, at Harrogate & District Hospital is looking for an Assistant Practitioner to initially carry out specimen processing in the Microbiology, Molecular and Serology sections of the laboratory.  Harrogate District Hospital Laboratory is part of the Integrated Pathology Solutions LLP Microbiology team.  Integrated Pathology Solutions LLP is an innovative joint-venture pathology service between Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust, Airedale NHS Foundation Trust and Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This partnership delivers a high-quality pathology service through collaboration between three Trusts for the benefit of patients and service users. The successful candidate will be employed directly by the NHS as a Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust employee.

Main duties of the job

The team at Harrogate is small and friendly, requiring a high degree of teamwork and co-operation from its members, so candidates should be prepared to be part of the close- knit environment fostered in the department.

The successful candidate will be trained to use a variety of diagnostic analysers in the Microbiology, Serology and Molecular sections of the laboratory.  They will be expected to participate in all aspects of the routine laboratory work including waste management and stock keeping.  It is compulsory for the post holder to participate in working non-core hours (core hours: 09:00-17:30), including evenings 17:30 until 21:00 and at weekends & Bank holidays on a rotational basis.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSEs in Maths, Science and English Language
Desirable criteria
  • A-level in a science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • IBMS Certificate of Achievement part I
  • One of: Foundation Degree in Healthcare Science, HND in appropriate subject, Non IBMS accredited BSc in Biomedical Science or NVQ level 4 in Science

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 1 - 2 years' experience in a UK laboratory
Desirable criteria
  • Recent experience of working in a Pathology laboratory.
  • Recent experience of working with automated analysers in Pathology and / or Microbiology
  • Experience of using the DiaSorin Liaison XL and / or Sysmex UF5000

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Possess above average manual dexterity and co-ordination of movement.
  • Able to communicate clearly on the telephone and in writing.
  • Capable of frequent concentration for prolonged periods of time.
  • Keyboard skills
  • Ability to remain standing or sitting in one position for long periods making repetitive movements
  • Ability to work effectively under time and workload pressures
  • Ability for light physical effort lifting/moving boxes, waste bags and pushing trolleys.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of various Microsoft packages (Excel, Word)
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Pathology IT systems
  • Knowledge of ISO 15189
