Clinical Teaching Fellow in ENT

This is a post based in Otorhinolaryngology at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH), Queen’s Medical Centre Campus. It will offer a unique combination of teaching opportunities at NUH. It will involve taking a lead role in the organisation, development and delivery of clinical teaching and tutorials to medical students based at NUH, both within the clinical workplace and in a teaching/skills environment.Ìý

Personal teaching skills will be developed and improved, along with understanding and experience of experiential learning, competency assessment and evaluation tools. There will also be the opportunity to develop skills and experience in non-technical areas such as communication and de/briefing working alongside experienced faculty members UMED.

The post would be ideal for either a post CT2-ST3 or a mid-scheme ST4-8, an experienced SHO or Specialist Registrar who has a clinical background involving Otorhinolaryngology. The successful applicant will also have an interest in medical education and educational research.

The post holder will be responsible for the development and teaching to FFP ENT medical students as they rotate through their placement at QMC. They will also have input alongside other Clinical Teaching Fellows into the Year 1 & 2 Early Clinical Experience Course and support other courses and patient workshops within NUH.Ìý Responsibility for the following:

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Organisation of a programme of learning over 12-24 months

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Deliver induction, tutorials and practical skills sessions for medical students

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Organising and conducting formative assessments

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Contributing questions for online summative assessment.Ìý

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Providing intensive coaching for ENT re-sit students.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Collating and disseminating feedback and updating the course/curriculum

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To establish case histories available for tutorial discussions and develop self-directed learning materials.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Maintain key working relationships with clinical staff, administrative staff, academic staff, clinical directors in ENT Module and the undergraduate co-ordinator at NUH.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Support all areas of the clinical course, whether teaching, workshops, teaching fellow meetings and other initiatives

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Providing intensive coaching for ENT re-sit and other clinical students

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Support Year 1 & Year 2 Early Clinical visits

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Support other Teaching and Patient Workshops as required. Ìý

As one of the NHS Trusts identified in the New Hospital Programme, a programme of investment in NHS hospitals, we have extensive plans to improve our hospitals and the services we deliver for patients. As well as the redevelopment of the Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital, plans for a new 70 bed NHS rehabilitation facility set to be built on the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate near Loughborough, are currently going through the approvals process.Ìý

The post would be dedicated full time to Undergraduate Medical Education.

The Otorhinolaryngology Department provides clinical teaching for medical students from the University of Nottingham Medical School.Ìý The ENT module is within the Foundation to Practice (FFP) course for 3rd year students. FFP is the first full-time clinical attachment for medical students, and runs from late February to the end of October.Ìý This course and forms part of the new curriculum that started in February 2022.Ìý There are 5 blocks of 6 weeks with approximately 30 students per block (150 in total)Ìý

The Clinical Teaching Fellow will support the development of the course structure, assessment criteria and materials.Ìý The role holder will also deliver taught sessions, clinical teaching and mandatory workplace based assessments (DOPs and Min-Cex) that are part of each module.Ìý The rest of their time will be spent attending the MMedSci in Medical Education, supporting other clinical courses at NUH as required and undertaking projects relevant to medical education.

The following is a guideline of the weekly job plan and timetable:

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý 6 - 8 teaching sessions per week for ENT student teaching (Feb– Oct) including introductory sessions, small group clinical skills teaching, developmental teaching and 1 to 1 sessions

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý 2 sessions for admin / CPD / clinical work ( if wished by fellow)

Experience

  • Minimum 4 months ENT experience as a doctor, or equivalent experience in ENT
  • Two Years of NHS Clinical experience, with satisfactory completion of clinical training attachments both in central (Teaching) and peripheral (District General) acute hospitals
