Job overview

We are looking to recruit a highly experienced radiotherapy physicist to the role of Principal Physicist responsible for Radiotherapy Dosimetry atÌý Nottingham Radiotherapy Centre. You must have HCPC registration as a clinical scientist and ideally you should have registration as an MPE. However those with enough experience to be able to submit an MPE portfolio within 1 year will be considered.Ìý

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have specific responsibilities within the area of Radiotherapy Dosimetry. Specifically this will include the day-to-day scientific and technical management of dosimetry and managing the medium term developments of the dosimetry service, such as the introduction of new techniques and the commissioning of new treatment machines. They will also act as an RPS for Radiotherapy Physics.

The post holder co-ordinates the services provided by Radiotherapy Physics and the Radiotherapy Department with respect to dosimetry. There will be close liaison with the Head of Clinical Radiotherapy Physics, Head of Dosimetry and QA, and the principal physicists for Information Systems, SRS, brachytherapy, treatment planning and Imaging. Guidance in this role may be obtained from the Head of Radiotherapy Physics.

The post holder is required to communicate at all scientific and management levels in pursuance of their duties. They will be required to explain, influence and persuade people with regard to change in practice. They will act as a Medical Physics Expert as defined by legislation (IRMER 2017).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.ÌýÌýÌý Patient/client care

1.1.Ìý To manage and have day to day responsibility for the dosimetry and quality assurance of all the radiotherapy treatment units and dosimetry equipment in accordance with all relevant legislation and guidance.

Ìý1.2.Ìý To ensure adherence to national legislation.

Ìý1.3.Ìý Plan, organise and coordinate calibration schedules and cross-calibrations both external beam and brachytherapy (afterloading units and sources), traceable to national standards, on which the accuracy of all patient treatments depends

1.4.Ìý Assist the Head of Dosimetry and QA in the inter-comparison of all dosimetry equipment (dosemeters, dose checking devices and ancillary equipment) to national standards.Ìý Ensure each item of equipment is correctly calibrated and its performance is monitored against required standards.Ìý

Ìý1.5.Ìý Management of and participation in external dosimetry audits (interdepartmental, national and international) and NUH representative on Midlands Interdepartmental Audit Group (comprising 10 radiotherapy centres).

Ìý2.ÌýÌýÌý Policy and service development

Ìý2.1.Ìý Propose and implement service developments with specific responsibilities for radiation dosimetry and quality assurance.

2.2.Ìý Suggest developments and updates for relevant procedures within the Radiotherapy and Radiotherapy Physics ISO9000 quality system.

2.3.Ìý Ensure that all work is delivered in accordance with the Radiotherapy and Radiotherapy Physics ISO9000:2000 quality system and Trust policies and procedures by:

2.3.1.ÌýÌýÌý Ensuring that all relevant local procedures are of an appropriate standard, conform to national standards or guidelines and are regularly reviewed and agreed, as appropriate, with service users.

2.3.2.ÌýÌýÌý Advising on the written procedures required to cover all aspects of the work the post holder is responsible for.Ìý All procedures should be subject to regular review to ensure that current published guidelines, published literature; results of local or national audits and changes in technology are taken into account

3.ÌýÌýÌý Physical and financial resources

Ìý3.1.Ìý Be responsible for the safe use of Trust Linax machines.

Ìý3.2.Ìý Be responsible for the section’s input to the commissioning, acceptance testing, and routine testing/calibration of radiotherapy systems that are within the remit of this post.

Ìý3.3.Ìý To advise Radiotherapy Physics on suppliers of equipment by having expert knowledge of such equipment.

4.ÌýÌýÌý Human Resources

4.1.Ìý Day to day supervision of Radiotherapy Physics Staff carrying out work in area of responsibility.

Ìý4.2.Ìý Act as Radiation Protection Supervisor for Radiotherapy Physics Staff working with Radiotherapy equipment

Ìý4.3.Ìý Ensure Radiotherapy Physics staff are adequately trained and work to agreed systems and procedures for the areas of responsibility

Ìý4.4.Ìý Train staff from within the Radiotherapy Physics Department in this area

Ìý4.5.Ìý Assist with the training clinical scientist trainees in aspects of Radiotherapy PhysicsÌý

5.ÌýÌýÌý Information ResourcesÌý

Ìý5.1.Ìý Able to develop spreadsheets and databases in response to local need

Ìý5.2.Ìý To aid Radiotherapy in the production of required statistical information

Ìý6.ÌýÌýÌý Research & Development

Ìý6.1.Ìý To develop the dosimetry programme within Radiotherapy and Radiotherapy Physics

Ìý6.2.Ìý Participate in research and development within Radiotherapy Physics as required, actively contributing to improvement and innovation in the division.

Ìý6.3.Ìý Be aware of developments within radiotherapy physics both nationally and internationally.

Ìý6.4.Ìý Manage the introduction of new developments within area of responsibility.

Ìý6.5 Participate and lead in the evaluation of radiotherapy dosimetry equipment

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registration as clinical scientist
  • M.Sc. in medical physics or equivalent
  • Language qualifications required for HCPC registration

  • MPE regisitration

Experience

  • Substantial experience in radiotherapy physics
  • In depth knowledge of radiotherapy treatment planning
