Job overview

The Welsh Blood Service (WBS) strives to be a research active organisation, where researchers are supported to perform high quality healthcare research. WBS is developing a more corporate approach to Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I), focusing on collaborative research, with proactive support for researchers, a better research infrastructure with clearer governance and management processes.

The RD&I Officer will assist and support all aspects of research and development activity within the Welsh Blood Service, they will help implement WBS鈥檚 RD&I strategy and embed RD&I activity into the service. The post holder will provide high-level administration and logistical support for the RD&I function.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the administration of the RD&I process. They will support both the research office and the researcher in the development and facilitation of research activity. Working alongside staff and researchers they will help set up projects, address feasibility issues and ensuring that studies are able to be approved and set up in a timely manner.听

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will be the day-to-day point of contact, both internally and for external researchers, coordinating and supporting researchers navigating their way through the complex research governance and approval process for research studies across the organisation.
Working closely with the Head of RD&I Services within WBS and other RD&I staff from Velindre University NHS Trust, the post-holder will further develop their understanding of the purpose and principles of research and development.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in a healthcare or science-related field.
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate training or qualification, related to research.
  • Good Clinical Practice training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience a research-related facilitation role in either the NHS, academic, public sector or corporate environment
  • Understanding and use of medical and healthcare terminology.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the regulations and guidelines governing research in the NHS.
  • Well-developed computer skills and excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
  • Experience of data management including data entry spreadsheet and reporting use and database use and reporting.
  • Preparing and contributing to reports
  • Production of summary information from data / metrics from a variety of sources
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Awareness of other relevant regulations relating to research (such as Data Protection Act).
  • Experience in completing IRAS applications

Essential criteria
  • Experience of managing multiple projects / assignments at any one time with excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectivity and tactfully and in a confidential manner.
  • Ability to communicate with colleagues at all levels of the organisation.
  • Ability to use initiative within the scope of the role and to work confidently under limited day to day supervision.
Desirable criteria
  • Welsh Language Skills are Desirable at level 1 or above in speaking in Welsh
