Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to lead the Dispensary service within Pharmacy Department at the Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust.

We are looking for a registered pharmacy technician with the GPhC who has experience and knowledge of working within a dispensary setting and management experience to lead the Dispensary team, made up of pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants.

This role is part of the senior management team and is critical to the operational day to day running and future development of the Dispensary Service.

The successful candidate will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team, enthusiasm to promote new ideas, determination to succeed in a challenging environment, the ability to remain calm under pressure and a commitment to future developments in pharmacy.

Main duties of the job

To provide an effective, efficient and patient-centered pharmacy service in accordance with current legislation, accepted professional and ethical standards and clinical requirements.

§Ìý Ìý Ìý To be responsible for the RUH Pharmacy Dispensary services, including leading and motivating staff, providing excellent managerial leadership to ensure that the Pharmacy Dispensary provides the expected level of service to both the RUH site, Community Hospitals and other Care Providers.

§Ìý Ìý Ìý To ensure safe systems of work at all times, continually monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and dynamically managing and developing the Dispensary service provision, implementing LEAN principals and best practice, in order to address the increasing demands of the service.

§Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýAssess and develop the skills, training and competencies of all grades of staff working within the Dispensary and be responsible for the co-ordination of appropriate training (including student pharmacy technicians) alongside the Lead Pharmacy Technician for Learning & Development.

§Ìý Ìý Ìý To attend internal and external meetings and deputise for the Lead Pharmacy Technician – Operations as required.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent
  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent
  • Qualified NVQ Assessor to A1 standards or equivalent
  • Nationally recognised Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician qualification (ACPT)
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Supervisory Qualification or equivalent experience
  • Qualified NVQ Assessor to A1 standards or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Member of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians (APTUK)
  • Managerial qualification to Diploma level or equivalent experience
  • NVQ Level 4 in Management or equivalent, or equivalent experience in Pharmacy Management role
  • Knowledge of pharmacy service procedures, including GDP, falsified medicines directive etc.
  • Project Management training or qualification
  • Computer literacy qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven analytical and judgemental skills to resolve issues to a satisfactory resolution, taking into account the service user requirements, staffing resources and financial implications
  • Current experience working in a hospital, planning and organising complex activities including prioritisation of different services to a variety of service users, working dynamically and managing staff strategically to meet the changing demands of the service throughout the day
  • Experience in providing specialist clinical services and advice to patients, service users, colleagues and AHPs within the wider MDT, referring to a Pharmacist if required
  • Dispensing and final accuracy checking of medicines for patients and service users to a high level of accuracy
  • Proven ability to work within current Pharmacy Medicines Legislation at all times
  • Experience in writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and implementation of changing practices within a Pharmacy environment to ensure best practice
  • Good knowledge of therapeutic drug use in clinical situations gained by ongoing education and CPD
  • Sound knowledge of the legal requirements (Law and Ethics) for dispensing and supplying medicines, including CDs
  • Aware of risk and Health and Safety issues and their implications for staff
  • Experience as a line manager for pharmacy personnel including Pharmacy Technicians and Assistants including workload allocation, performance, recruitment lead and selection of staff, career development, sickness absence & performance management
  • Thorough understanding of procedures, protocols and legal requirements governing the issue of clinical trials, controlled drugs, unlicensed and other medications
  • In depth knowledge of relevant Human Resources policies and procedures and how to apply them consistently and effectively
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and training in all relevant management matters e.g. recruitment and selection, appraisal, managing performance etc.
  • Detailed knowledge of accreditations available to Pharmacy Technicians (e.g. Medicines Optimisation, ACPT, PIPC, PAAP etc.)

  • Experience of management of a Pharmacy Service, including strategic workforce planning, rota writing and dynamic utilisation of staff and resources
