An opportunity has arisen on Yew ward within our Specialist Low Secure Forensic Service for a Staff nurse based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Yew ward is a 12 bedded male acute unit.Ìý
ÌýWe are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to work as a staff nurse as part of the nursing team. The post holder will be: professional, open minded and work well as part of a team.
ÌýDue to the nature of the unit, successful candidates will be confidential, provide person centred support and be able to care for someone in a non judgemental way.
ÌýSome tasks will include administering medication, aiding service users recovery, which involves working closely with service users on individualised risk reduction work.
Due to Yew ward being a forensic ward, the post holder will require a good understanding of the 3 different types of security (physical, relational and procedural). This is to ensure the safety of service users, staff and visitors. With this in mind Yew ward follows the model of least restrictive practice.
ÌýIncreasing service user engagement is a big part of the role. On Yew ward, individualised care in paramount to ensure they get the right care.Ìý Your role will aim to build a therapeutic relationship with service users on the ward and support them in all tasks of daily life to improve their health and wellbeing and quality of life.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work within a close team of other staff nurses and healthcare support workers on the ward to ensure safe running of the ward and patient centred care at all times.
The post holder will have opportunity to work closely with service users as a key nurse and contribute to the wider multi-disciplinary team, This role requires the post holder to be able to document in an accurate and timely fashion.Ìý
ÌýDue to the nature of forensic mental health working, the post holder will be offered both managerial and clinical supervision and regular support from the team.
ÌýThis is an opportunity for the post holder to work within a specialist team including a variety of disciplines with a wide range of knowledge and expertise.
ÌýAssessing risk as a huge part of being a forensic mental health nurse in all elements of the role such as: pre leave risk assessments, up to completing FACE and HCR-20 risk assessments.
ÌýStaff nurses are required to work a regular rotation of night shifts, long days, alternative weekend working and working bank holidays – including Christmas and new year.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Delegating tasks, planning the daily nursing board to ensure safe running of the ward.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Facilitate activities and support service users on section 17 leave.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Facilitate 1 to 1 sessions and build a rapport with our service users
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Completing risk reduction work with service users, such as: substance misuse, coping skills, mindfulness and

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Completing key nurse paperwork in a timely manner such as: care plans, risk assessments, reading of MHA rights.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Possess first level qualification Part 3 or 13 of the NMC Register
- A willingness to undertake further training as appropriate to Forensic Mental Health Services
- Possess or be working towards a relevant teaching and assessing qualification
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act (1983) with particular reference to Part 3
- Demonstrate an awareness/understanding of the evidence that underpins the care and treatment of mental illness
- Demonstrate an awareness/understanding of forensic mental health legislation framework and relevant national policy
Applicant requirements
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
