Job overview

We are looking for a compassionate and quality driven Consultant Neurologist colleague to join our Neurology team.

This post offers an exciting opportunity to support our Neurology service. The appointee will work closely with our existing Neurologists, our CNS鈥檚, ward staff and the teams with the Trust and community, to deliver high-quality neurological care.

The day to day work of the successful applicant will be located at the West Suffolk Hospital, supported by our excellent integrated CNS team both within the trust and the community. The post holder will deliver an outpatient and ward referral service. There are no on call duties.

Candidates should be on or eligible for inclusion onto the GMC Specialist or be within 6 months of their expected date of obtaining a CCT (or equivalent) at the time of the interview.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Neurology Department also provides a ward consultation service for inpatients with neurological disorders. It is planned to make this service more responsive by providing daily input during the week. This will allow a timely assessment of patients with acute neurological disorders.

The Neurology department at the West Suffolk Hospital currently comprises four consultants, with a further day of Neurology provided by a Consultant, Dr Ed Needham, one day a week. In addition, three neurology disability nurses (with expertise in Multiple Sclerosis), three Parkinson鈥檚 Disease Nurses, and two Epilepsy Specialist nurses and three secretaries

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register in Neurology or be eligible for entry (the skills & experiences that would be gained during six months of attaining Certificate of Completion of Training) at the time of interview and hold a licence to practice.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MD or PhD

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Neurology
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Experience in management of Neurology in-patient and out-patient medicine
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a full spectrum of Neurology patients
Desirable criteria
  • Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR training programme or equivalent

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the neurology service
  • Ability to organise and manage a neurology service
  • Ability to manage and lead members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of audit management
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following: - 鈥 PLAB 1 鈥 PLAB 2 If applicants believe that they have adequate communication skills, but do not fit into one of the examples they need to provide evidence.
Desirable criteria
  • 5 years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme

Teaching and Training

  • Experience of supervising F1s, F2s and SpRs
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
  • Experience of workplace- based assessment
  • Experience in developing and delivering undergraduate teaching
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching basic clinic skills to undergraduates
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research

Management & Audit Training

Essential criteria
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the Neurology service
  • Ability to organise and manage day to day service delivery e.g. out-patient priorities
  • Ability to manage and lead strategic developments in service delivery
  • Experience of audit management
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets
