We have an exciting opportunity for a passionate and motivated band 6 Mammographer to work in the Breast Imaging department of the West Suffolk Hospital NHS Foundation Trust providing a high standard of care to all patients.

We are looking for a dynamic, versatile, and hard working Mammographer to join us who holds a recognised qualification in breast screening (as per NHSBSP guidelines)

Based in the centre of Suffolk, Bury St Edmunds is a market town, within easy reach of London and Cambridge.

The department has a team that includes all 4 tiers of the skill mix, from assistant practitioner to Consultant radiographer.
Ìý
The department offers a breast outpatients clinic as well as screening of the local eligible population on our 2 mobile screening vans. You will be expected to participate in all aspects of the mammography service on site and remotely, this includes participation in all QA duties.
All our equipment is fully digital and integral to our outpatient’s department providing our patients with an excellent and integrated service.
We will consider this as a trainee position, if training is required the role will be paid at band 5 until completion of specific accredited mammography training course. If you already hold the mammography certificate, you will commence this role as a Band 6.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:
Ìý
- Provide specialist mammographic clinical technical services. To provide a full symptomatic and asymptomatic mammography service.
- Provide timely, efficient, and courteous provisions of breast imaging services to the agreed standards of the department, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Society of Radiographers.
- Work remotely on mobile vans to provide the breast screening service.
- Maintain up to date HCPC registration to practice.
- Ensure requirements of radiation administration and protection are observed as identified in the department local rules, procedure protocols and guidelines.
- Expert skills to perform all QA on all equipment routinely.

- Communication:
- Expert communication skills with staff and patients and the ability to handle difficult conversations.
- Effectively communicate with all grades of staff, carers, and patients. Adaptation of skills is needed to explain and carry out a variety of procedures.
- Provide and receive information relating to the management and imaging of breast imaging patients. This may be of a complex, sensitive, or contentious nature. Persuasive, motivational, and re-assurance skills will be required, in order to achieve agreement and cooperation from patients where there may be barriers to understanding.
- Understanding of the sensitive nature of the role and the complex communication needs required.
- Willing to undertake communication training or clinical updates as required.

- Planning and organisational Skills:
- To work unsupervised in a specialist area with autonomy making judgements on protocol.
- Planning and organisation of own workload, including breast screening sessions on a mobile unit.
- Adhere to the unit rota for clinic provisions.
- To be flexible with working hours wherever possible, if required.
- To undertake all Radiation, Health & Safety procedures as applicable to the department and/or Trust.

- Clinical Duties:
- Undertake all mammography duties for screening and symptomatic clinics including CESM, TOMO, assessment views, Implants etc.
- To carry out tasks delegated by the Superintendent or Deputy Superintendent Radiographer in Mammography.
- Work closely with other breast care practitioners and radiologists to provide a high-quality service.
- Provide exceptional patient care.
- To attend multi-disciplinary meetings each year as appropriate
- Carry out quality assurance on all mammography equipment.
- To maintain high standards within the breast imaging team and service at all times.
- Manipulate complex mammographic equipment, always ensuring safe use.
- To be responsible for the management of patient images and data including processing, archiving, copying, image contrast and multi-planar image display.
- Report faults appropriately as required.
- Follow the departments quality assurance procedures.
- Accept referrals from other disciplines, adhering to Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulation (IRMER), on justification of procedures.
- Develop sufficient expertise in mammography to be able to act correctly on the information received.
- Ensure adequate CPD to maintain HCPC registration.
- Participate in trust appraisal scheme.
- Undertake clinical research imaging if requested.
- To participate in regular mandatory training including Fire Safety, Resuscitation and Manual Handling procedures and ensure these are followed.
- Adhere to department policies on Infection Control and the Handling and Clearing of Bodily Fluids.
- Adhere to departments COSHH regulations including dealing with a chemical spillage.

- Governance:
- To assist the department in audit and facilitating the Quality Standard for Imaging (QSI) accreditation.
- Participate in Governance and support the Governance Radiographer Practitioner in departmental audits.
- Ensure policies and procedures are followed, auditing processes as required.

- Leadership and management:
- Supervise and teach student radiographers and assistant practitioners as required.
- Support new staff in induction. Teach and promote awareness and compliance with policies and protocols.
- Work with an AP at remote locations and act as the supervising member of staff

- Information Resources:
- To be able to record all relevant dose information on CRIS as per Employer’s Procedures, in line with IR(ME)R.
- Be able to enter patient details, access patient records/history and retrieve images on the Trust’s computerised radiography systems and workstations as well as the patient archiving and communication system.

Essential criteria
- • BSc radiography/ Diploma of the College of Radiographers
- • Post graduate Certificate in Mammography or willing to train
- • Valid HCPC registration
Experience and knowledge

- • Proven record of high-quality image production and patient care
- • Experience with practical applications of QA within breast imaging
- • Evidence of CPD
- • Experience working in the NHS
