Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Within specific guidelines and following training to be solely responsible and accountable for a clinical case load working within codes of practice and professional guidelines.Ìý This includes patient documentation in both professional and medical notes and monthly statistical work sheets.

After a period of training to be solely responsible for the primary assessment of post-operative patients according to the guidelines on both the orthopaedic and day surgery unit.Ìý The list is not exhaustive but may include:

• Total knee replacement
• Total hip replacement
• Fracture neck of femur
• Arthroscopic Knee surgery
• Foot surgery
• Shoulder surgery

After a period of training the clinical role may include:

• Provision of walking aids and instruct patients in their use,
• Checking the condition of walking aids/other equipment,
• Identifying the need for and fitting cricket pad splints and ROM braces.
• Provision and progression of an appropriate treatment plan to include exercises and mobility aids
• Fitting of orthotics once provided by a Physiotherapist/Appliance officer
• Teaching and supervision of exercises,
• Checking patients ability to manage stairs prior to discharge,
• Applying cryotherapy
• Set up continuous passive motion (CPM) machine and instruct patient in the use
• To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical risk and reporting untoward incidents.
• To demonstrate a physical ability to carry out physiotherapy interventions and therapeutic handling without direct supervision.Ìý There is frequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort for several short periods during a day.
• To be responsible for the safe use of equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties adhering to the department’s medical devices policy.Ìý This includes competency and accuracy to use equipment by you and other healthcare professional, carers and patients.
