Job overview

We are pleased to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our Geriatric Medicine team based at Epsom Hospital. The successful applicant will offer an important role in the assessment, treatment and management of older people in addition to contributing to the overall proactive and preventative agenda. You will work within our forward thinking and expert multidisciplinary team to provide excellent care.

You will be expected to bring dynamism and enthusiasm to further develop a service fit for the future needs of our local population whilst ensuring that current service provision continues to be high-value and delivered to the highest standard. Frequent review of the service is anticipated to ensure that Trust and departmental strategic priorities are being met.

You will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education. The development of relevant research interests is encouraged, and opportunities will be enhanced alongside areas of specialist interest.

Main duties of the job

Be responsible for the clinical management of in and outpatients under your care

Show dynamism, enthusiasm and flexibility in participating in the provision and reshaping of services for the older person and developing integrated ways of working with the community frailty teams

Provide a first-class clinical service to all older people

Provide education, senior guidance and input to help resident doctors make clinical decisions and develop their clinical knowledge and fulfil training needs

Lead and support the multi-disciplinary team with complex discharge planning

Facilitate the safe and timely discharge of patients, using community support services where appropriate to achieve this

To actively participate and be engaged in daily multi-disciplinary team meetings

To participate in the development and implementation of care pathways for older patients presenting or referred to the acute hospital

Work within framework of applicable Trust policies, procedures, and clinical governance

To work within contractual requirements, and in support of applicable Trust clinical development frameworks, business plans and development strategies

To, at all times, comply with the GMC's 'Good Medical Practice' as amended or substituted from time to time

Be responsible and accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence and professionally accountable to the Medical Director

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The principal duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to patients.

  • To at all times, comply with the GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’ as amended or substituted from time to time.
  • To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  • To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your Clinical Director.
  • To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Clinical Director.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Hold a medical qualification
  • Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e. MRCP or equivalent.
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC for GIM and Geriatric Medicine or be within six months of obtaining CCT
Desirable criteria
  • MD, PhD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research.

Teaching & Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and post graduate trainees
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
  • Ability to contribute to change management
  • Ability to apply research findings to clinical problems Ability to critically review research
  • Experience of supervising resident doctors
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching lay groups and other staff groups
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research

Clinical, Management & Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty
  • Audit & Research experience
  • Attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CESR
  • Supervision of post-graduate trainees
  • Clinical governance
  • Ability to organise inpatient and outpatient waiting lists
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of service development

Language

Essential criteria
  • • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
