Job overview

Applicants are invited for one fixed term post of Speciality Doctor in Ophthalmology with a special interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust.

We are looking for a dynamic doctor for the post of speciality doctor with a specific interest in Paediatric ophthalmology within a well-established Ophthalmology service. Paediatric Ophthalmology Experience in the UK at fellowship level is essential for this role.

This post offers significant independent paediatric Ophthalmology, ROP screening & treatment experience.ÌýÌýThe post is only suitable for those with an interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology who are also seeking to gain additional CESR competencies. Research and Audit is actively encouraged and supported in the department with ample opportunities.

The post is offered with a job plan of 10 Professional Activities (PAs). On-call duties (1:8-1:9) are offered on a first or second on call basis based on relevant experience.

Main duties of the job

ÌýOutpatient Activity – Undertaking Paediatric ophthalmology clinics independently, ROP screening and treatment and posting in different subspecialities in order to work towards achieving CESR competencies.

  • EERS/Emergency Duties (Eye Emergency Referral Service) - Providing referral triage, emergency and urgent diagnosis and treatment. Assistance of senior medical staff with emergency surgery. Provide cover for colleagues on leave as indicated in the duty rota.Ìý It may be necessary to attend other hospitals in order to see patients on an emergency basis. Performing duties during emergencies and in unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, consultation where practicable with colleagues both senior and junior.
  • Theatre Activity – Provide support in theatres and undertake independent theatre sessions in line with abilities.
  • Ward Rounds - Attending ward rounds and examination of pre-and postoperative patients. Ward duties to cover leave and provide continuity of care.Ìý
  • ÌýOn-Call -Ìý The rota is 1:8 or 1:9 with prospective cover.Ìý The post is non-resident on call and the working pattern is defined as "on call rota". When on weekend call, the Specialty doctor on duty will attend the ophthalmic unit each morning to participate in the ward round and attend eye casualty.
