Main duties of the job
Would you like to start a rewarding career in the National Health Service undertaking training to obtain a QCF Level 2 in Pharmacy Services? Or perhaps you are already a qualified QCF (formerly NVQ) Level 2 Pharmacy Assistant looking for a change. We are looking for a dedicated, organised and motivated person to join us as a Rotational Pharmacy Assistant.
You will rotate through the Aseptic Suite, Dispensary, Ward services and Stores sections gaining experience and undertaking additional training if required.
Applicants should have good communication & organisational skills; be self-motivated and possess excellent interpersonal skills, be flexible and able to work well in an environment of change and transition. Applicants must also have good computer skills and be able to work well under pressure. Parts of this job are physically demanding and it is essential that you are physically fit.
You must be willing to learn and take responsibility, working well within a diverse team consisting of Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Assistants, Pharmacists, Nurses and Clerical staff. You will also be expected to develop good working relationships with other departments within the Pharmacy and Hospital.
You will work closely with the rest of the pharmacy team to provide high quality pharmaceutical care to all patients within the Trust, whether in a dispensary or ward based aspect.Ìý

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To dispense in-patient, out- patient, discharge prescriptions and aseptically prepared items in line with departmental SOPs ensuring that standards of quality, accuracy and timeliness are met.Ìý Working under the supervision of pharmacy technicians or pharmacists.Ìý Seeking advice on any complex prescriptions before dispensing.
To dispense controlled drugs (CDs) to ensure that the requirements of the Misuse of Drugs Act (1970), RPSGB standards and departmental SOPs are met. To document receipt of CDs into the CD registers (paper and electronic) as soon after receipt as possible.Ìý To ensure that all registers are kept accurate at all times reporting any discrepancies to the Dispensary Co-Ordinator.
Receive into the department (this includes dispensary, stores and Aseptic Unit) work requests from patients (collecting prescription charges) and wards. Provide the patient or ward staff with appropriate information on how the drugs will be dispatched and the likely waiting time.Ìý Answer any basic queries concerning the supply of medication from patients or staff members, including phone queries, referring them to a technician or pharmacist to answer any clinical or technical query.
Keep all work areas clean and tidy. Adhere to cleaning SOPs in the Aseptic Lab. Ensure stock is rotated and in date.Ìý Following the ‘returns’ SOP ensure all excess stock is removed from wards and returned to pharmacy stock
Assist in basic clerical duties including filing and photocopying.
Work flexibly across all of the Pharmacy departments, covering the work of colleagues during peak periods or absence.
Participate in appropriate training and development activities including your own personal development and participate in the education and training of colleagues.
Participate in appraisals and personal reviews and work to achieve agreed set objectives.
Participate in weekend, late night and Bank Holiday working as may be required.
Undertake any other duties as required by the Director of Pharmacy in accordance with the grade and nature of the post.
