The Trust is looking to appoint consultant physicians with a strong background in and a passion for Geriatric medicine. We are looking for an individual with enthusiasm for change and service development as we build the key components of an integrated system of care for frail elderly patients.

This post will support the delivery of an acute frailty service and will provide clinical leadership in the strategic development of the service which will further enhance the care and improve the care provision for frail elderly patients in North Warwickshire. We are currently investing in and improving our front door frailty service seeking to increase the depth and resilience in order that frail adults can be rapidly assessed and managed avoiding the need for inpatient admission where that is possible.Ìý

Main duties of the job

The Trust has recently introduced a Consultant Foundation Programme, led by the Medical Director and internal and external mentors, with the following aims:

Raise awareness of the new consultant’s role and the importance of their impact in interacting with, leading and influencing their team

Explore how to deliver safe and effective care within a wider clinical and trust environment

Understand how to work successfully within the NHS environment, balancing targets, finance and with other agencies.

In addition, the successful applicant will be well supported by the wider GEH Elderly Care team, comprising of 5 substantive consultants, two registrars, three HO’s, two SHOs, four ACPs, three PAs, four clinical nurse specialists and dedicated admin support.

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust (‘GEH’) is an integrated acute, community and primary care service provider comprising George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton, and Community Dental Services for Warwickshire and the Urgent Care Centre based at GEH. The Trust’s main hub is the George Eliot Hospital, a small district general hospital spread across a 32-acre site based on the outskirts of Nuneaton.

GEH serves a population of about 300,000 from Nuneaton & Bedworth, North Warwickshire, Southwest Leicestershire and Northern Coventry. It serves a catchment population between the major hospitals in Coventry, Leicester and East Birmingham.

GEH provides annual activity of 65,000 A&E attendances, 20,000 planned admissions, 20,000 emergency admissions, 215,000 outpatient attendances and on average 1,800 births.

The George Eliot Hospital has 330 beds and provides services for General Medicine, Care of the Elderly, Haematology, General Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Orthopaedics.Ìý There is a 24-hour accident and emergency service. Ophthalmology, Neurology, Rheumatology and ENT services are provided on an outpatient basis at the George Eliot, with inpatient services for these specialities being available in Coventry (10 miles away). Consultant Oncology services are provided by UHCW with outpatient clinics, chemotherapy and other cancer treatments provided on the day case Dorothea Ward.Ìý

A Macmillan Information Centre is located at the front door of the hospital and Guideposts, a charity providing carer support is located on the campus.Ìý Clinical Nurse Specialists are available for all the main tumour types and acute oncology/CUP at GEH with other support available through University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire.Ìý Cancer MDTs take place at GEH with support and input from the hospital palliative care team.

There are 8 operating theatres, a Coronary Care Unit and a separate Intensive Care Unit staffed for 8 beds. Beds are utilised for both ITU and HDU purposes.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Completion or near completion of a Specialist Training programme in Geriatric and General Medicine
  • Broad clinical experience in care of the elderly and General Internal Medicine
  • Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice
  • Understanding of the Clinical Governance process
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of the NHS. Experience outside the specialty

Qualification(s) and Professional Training

  • MRCP or equivalent

  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register in geriatric and general medicine within 6 months of AAC date.
  • Higher degree. Evidence of sub-specialty or other specific training
