Job overview

The post holder will form part of a team of 9 lower GI surgeons to contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of a high-quality lower GI surgery service to the population of ÌýSussex.Ìý


The post holder will contribute to a surgical service for general and benign LGI surgical conditions (including inflammatory bowel disease, endometriosis resection and abdominal wall reconstruction).

This work will be carried out predominantly in Haywards Heath (PRH), Brighton (RSCH), with some day case/clinic work in Lewes Victoria Hospital or Southlands Hospital (Shoreham).Ìý

Main duties of the job


The post holder will also provide elective care for patients with benign LGI conditions: inflammatory bowel disease and abdominal wall reconstruction. ÌýThe LGI department also supports the gynaecology oncology service and endometriosis service and the post holder will have the opportunity to develop these collaborations further. ÌýUntil recently only short stay patients could be accommodated at PRH, but the service has been expanded to facilitate longer stays for patients with more complex conditions. Ìý

As part of a service reconfiguration colorectal cancer resectional surgery is planned to be delivered from Worthing Hospital with colorectal cancer surgeons tak

ing part in the on-call rota and emergency surgery provision in Brighton. ÌýThis reconfiguration will eventually enable the formation of a single colorectal surgery department across the Trust, of which the post holder would be a key member.Ìý

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to take a significant role in ensuring governance and oversight of the LGI surgery service. This includes active participation morbidity/mortality meetings, delivery of local and national audits, implementation of NICE guidance and leading quality improvement activities.

Previous experience in the development of qualityÌý
governance structures would be desirable and additional job planned time may be available for candidates wishing to take a lead role in governance.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Basic medical degree
  • • Appropriate specialist qualification
  • • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • • CCT in General Surgery or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within
  • 6 months of the date of the AAC
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree

Clinical Skills & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Appropriate skills and experience in benign LGI surgery
  • • Evidence of expertise in surgical management of IBD
  • • Expertise in minimal access UGI surgery
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience working in a major trauma centre
  • • Qualification in trauma damage control surgery
  • • Fellowship training in LGI surgery

Knowledge

  • • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty
