Job overview
Principal Grade Practitioner Psychologist (Full time, 8b) in the Community Dementia and Older People's Mental Health Service (DOPMHs) 0.6 wte and Opal Ward (Older People's Mental Health ward at Langley Green Hospital) 0.4 wte , in Horsham and Crawley, West Sussex
We are very excited to be advertising this full-time Band 8b Practitioner Psychologist post working with people with dementia and older people with mental health problems in Horsham and Crawley.聽
The post will be based across our Dementia and Older People's Mental Health Service for Horsham and Crawley (3 days),聽 providing assessment and intervention to people people over 70 with other mental health issues,聽 people living with dementia and their families.聽 An additional 2 days of the post will be based on Opal Ward at Langley Green Hospital聽 in Crawley.聽 The post being based across both community and acute services for older people has the benefit of providing opportunities for continuity of care across the community and acute pathway.聽 聽There will also be opportunities to provide supervision, as well as leadership on a number of exciting developments in West Sussex, alongside two Consultant Clinical Psychologists and a Principal Grade Psychologist.聽聽
Main duties of the job
You would be working alongside other Practitioner Psychologists, Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioner and trainee Clinical Psychologists in North West Sussex. The post-holder will ideally be familiar with working in an NHS setting. We would welcome applicants able to provide both direct and indirect psychological work, preferably with experience of team consultant/formulation and working in care home settings. Knowledge and skills in neuropsychology would be welcome but not essential.
The post holder will be expected to travel across the geographical area covered by the team. There is a lot of variety in the role as part of the post sits in the Community mental health team (DOPMH) and an inpatient ward. We are keen to discuss with applicants how we can use their interests and experience to develop the role.
We would also be happy to consider candidates interested in working across teams/ specialties in a split post e.g. DOPMH and Working age adult posts or split with acute services. We can be flexible in developing these opportunities and would welcome informal discussions.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Post-graduate doctoral level training in applied psychology [or its equivalent for those trained before 1996 or outside the UK*] as approved by the HCPC, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
- For forensic psychologists working in forensic settings: Masters degree (with the award of the British Psychological Society qualification in forensic psychology or equivalent)
- Professionally registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health Professions Council (HCPC).
Knowledge/Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
- Demonstrate specialist experience gained postqualification of working as an applied psychologist with evidence of having received a substantial amount of clinical supervision (normally in the region of approximately 50 hours).
- Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
- Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
- Experience of the application of applied psychology in different cultural contexts and experience of working within a multicultural framework.
- Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care
- Experience or demonstrable knowledge of working with the particular client group served by the team/service
- Knowledge of guidance and legislation in relation to the client group and mental health
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialist psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc).
- High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies
- High level of knowledge and skills in neuropsychology and evidence of further practice and/or training since qualification.
- Formal training in supervision of other psychologists
- Evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
