Job overview

This post is a replacement for a retired colleague.Ìý The successful applicant will be required to deliver the microbiology and infection control service for Airedale NHS Foundation Trust. Applicants should possess FRCPath or equivalent and either have, or be within six months of receiving, a CCT in Microbiology or dual CCT in Microbiology /Infectious Diseases at the date of the advisory appointments committee. This must be evidenced on their application form. Full GMC registration is required.Ìý This appointment will be on the basis of the new consultant contract and is advertised as a full-time post with 10 programmed activities.Ìý Applications are welcome from those unable to work full-time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.Ìý

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will help to deliver the microbiology and infection control service for Airedale NHS Foundation Trust and manage the expanding clinical workload including ward liaison, antimicrobial stewardship, and laboratory development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical and Diagnostic Service

Ìý1. To provide, in collaboration with microbiology consultant colleague, a timely, reliable and comprehensive diagnostic service for Airedale Hospital and Primary Care users.

Ìý2. To provide advice and support to clinical colleagues, and to be available to discuss management of patients with infections.

Ìý3.Ìý To provide an out of hours advice service on a shared on-call basis between Airedale and Bradford Hospitals and potentially other Trusts that join Integrated Pathology Solutions joint venture subject to further discussion and agreement.

Ìý4. To participate in providing the Infection Prevention service with the nursing team.

ÌýService Delivery

Ìý5. To maintain a close working relationship with the other Airedale Consultant Microbiologist, the Bradford Consultant Microbiologists and Infectious Disease Consultants and the technical and scientific staff within the Department. Consultant staff are expected to work within the established management structure and abide by Departmental and Trust Policies.

Ìý6. To participate in the effective running of the Department, contributing to an equitable share of workload and facilities, the efficient use of staff and resources and the development of the service in support of the changing needs of clinical users and the Trust.Ìý It will be necessary to take delegated responsibility for agreed areas of the service, and to deputise for the Head of Department, or other lead roles, as necessary.

Ìý7. To ensure participation in Departmental and external audit and quality assurance (QA) in Microbiology.ÌýÌýÌý

Ìý8. To work with the Clinical Director, the Lead Clinician for Microbiology, the Managing Director of Pathology, the Head of Microbiology, the Quality Manager and other medical and scientific staff of the Pathology Service in the delivery of an efficient and effective pathology service.

Ìý9. To assist in co-ordinating the Pathology Department's response to any 'major incident’ occurring within the district, in accordance with the Trust’s Major Incident Procedure.

ÌýProfessional Standards and Clinical Governance

Ìý10. To maintain good clinical practice and contribute to mechanisms established within the Trust for the purposes of Clinical Governance including compliance with professional standards, quality assurance, risk and adverse incident reporting and participation in National Confidential Enquiries and Audits.

Ìý11. To maintain and develop skills and knowledge in the specialty and to participate in the Royal College of Pathologists’ Continuing Professional Development scheme.

Ìý12. To participate in annual Consultant appraisal, revalidation and job plan review, in accordance with the Trust’s Consultant appraisal and job planning procedures.

ÌýClinical Supervision and Training

Ìý13. To contribute to the professional supervision and training of medical, scientific and technical staff within the Department.

ÌýGeneral

Ìý14. To abide by Trust policies and procedures, including the Health & Safety, Risk Management and Control of Infection Policies, and procedures relating to personnel, recruitment and disciplinary matters.

15. To undertake any other duties necessary for the successful performance of the role, commensurate with the grade.

Person specification

Qualification and Training

Essential criteria
  • FRCPath or evidence of equivalent. Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview) If an applicant is UK trained, they must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • Experience of a wide range of general diagnostic work in Microbiology and Virology. Experience in the clinical management of patients with infection. Advising on Infection Prevention.
Desirable criteria
  • Progression through training programmes and achievement of professional qualifications in appropriate timeframe. Training occurred as part of structured training programme working with a range of specialists in various settings. MRCP(UK) or show evidence of equivalent qualification

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge of Microbiology and Infection Prevention practice, appropriate to this post, including the relevant guidance on the management of patients and outbreaks. Thorough understanding of the NHS Constitution and its implications.
Desirable criteria
  • Wide knowledge of Laboratory techniques including molecular methods. Experience in the management of Infection Prevention problems.
