Job overview

As a Respiratory Physiotherapist you will provide a comprehensive physiotherapy service to patients with a wide range of respiratory conditions. This will include complex, multi-pathologies from paediatrics, medical, surgical wards, critical care and the Emergency Department. You will also be responsible for the training of band 5 staff to work oncall.Ìý You will build on existing physiotherapy skills and consolidate specialist skills in respiratory physiotherapy required to manage these patient groups.

Main duties of the job

  • Ìý Ìý ÌýTo hold responsibility for own caseload and oversee team caseload, working without direct supervision.Ìý Supervision will take the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions and one to one sessions with supervisor.Ìý Access to advice and support from senior respiratory physiotherapists is available when required, but clinical work is not routinely evaluated.
  • Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý To chair team meetings, planning staffing and workloads.
  • To liaise with other senior inpatient staff to ensure adequate staffing across teams and offer cover if required/ableÌý
  • To ÌýÌýrepresent respiratory physiotherapy at appropriate multidisciplinary meetings, case conferences,Ìý
    clinics and working groups as required

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To promote respiratory physiotherapy within the Trust particularly promoting our role within critical careÌý
    with regards to chest treatment and early rehabilitation
  • To provide advice and guidance to the ICU MDT regarding tracheostomy weaning, appropriateness forÌý
    extubation and rehabilitation
  • To actively engage with the South West Critical Care Network and attend meetings and training as required
  • To provide clinical supervision to nursing/therapy students in partnership with the university, and toÌý
    supervise junior staff members and assistants.
  • To carry out training for new members of staff who will be working on the on call rota and delivering yearlyÌý
    training update to all on call staff.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • State Registered HCPC
  • Educated to Degree level in Physiotherapy or equivalent training and experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in ITU/HDU, surgical / medical inpatients, respiratory, front door and rehab
  • Experience of working as part of a MDT and of discharge planning
  • Experience of working on a respiratory on-call / weekend rota
  • Experience of supervising/managing students on placement
  • Supervision and training of other staff
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in orthopaedics, community and rapid response/admission avoidance
  • Experience of using outcome measures
  • Involvement in audits
  • Participation in service development and implementation of change

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good verbal communication to enable effective MDT working and communicating with relatives, patients etc
  • Highly motivated and committed to personal and service development
  • Proactive interest in respiratory specialism
  • Sound clinical reasoning skills to allow for appropriate treatment selection and discharge planning
  • Able to treat complex cases and assist juniors in their treatment
