The RBH has created 鈥淔3鈥 posts in a variety of specialties. Successful applicants can chose from a number of jobs in medical specialities, emergency medicine, intensive care and surgical specialties, depending upon availability. Main duties of the job

The 鈥淔oundation Year 3鈥 posts consist of 6 month placements in a variety of medical and surgical specialities. Each post will include the opportunity to develop a special interest in each placement. These posts are designed to cover prospective training post gaps or established trust posts, so exact details of all posts might not be available at time of interview. There will be posts in the following specialities: Gastroenterology, Respiratory, Rheum/Endo, Oncology, Cardiology, Renal, Stroke, Haematology, Elderly care, Palliative Care, Acute Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Paediatrics and Intensive Care Medicine.

Trust posts with predominantly involve daytime ward.

Trust posts with predominantly involve daytime ward based work with some weekend daytime working. Posts filling training post gaps will include out of hours work depending upon the gap being filled (Rotas are all DRS4 compliant).

The various posts have out of hours commitments. Emergency medicine posts will be on the Emergency Department rota at 鈥淪HO鈥 level. We may be able to accommodate an alternative proposal, or a planned time off, depending on circumstances and applicants. Intensive Care posts will be on the 鈥淪HO鈥 level ICU rota.

Post holders are entitled to 5 days study leave per 6 months and can attend trust teaching appropriate to their grade (co-ordinated a department ensuring adequate ward staffing cover).听

Working for our organisation

At RBH we value our trainees and junior doctors. We lead the way in organisational structure at training level and in other aspects including exception reporting and junior doctors鈥 forums. We have excellent feedback for our FY3 posts and previous FY3s have succeeded in getting the training posts they applied for.

In 2020, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated us as 鈥槼掖谴腔邂 overall and 鈥極utstanding鈥 in Outpatients and diagnostic imaging.

The hospital achieved Foundation Trust status on 1st June 2006. It was the first Foundation Trust in the South Central Strategic Health Authority. The Trust is one of the largest general hospital Trusts in the country and is Reading鈥檚 biggest employer.

The hospital provides all those services normally associated with a very large District General Hospital. The hospital provides services on a single site for all the major specialities including Accident and Emergency, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Intensive Care, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Genitourinary Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Maxillo-Facial surgery, paediatrics (including a NICU), general medicine (including all major medical specialities including CCU, Renal Unit, ITU and gastroenterology), radiotherapy and oncology, and all the general surgical specialities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Whilst not formal training posts these jobs are either generated from gaps in the training programmes or established trust posts. The Trust is committed to the educational development of medical staff within this programme. Candidates will be assigned an educational supervisor. Candidates will have access to study leave and the opportunity to undertake/participate in one or more of the following:

  • QIPP
  • Medical teaching roles including simulation
  • Research (where offered)
  • Dedicated FY3 teaching programme and journal clubs
  • Exposure to clinics / procedures
  • EWTD and New Deal compliant Rota鈥檚
  • Procedural skills such as Thoracic USS, Echo
  • Medical Education course with the University of Reading (PG Cert Ed)

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 鈥 MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • 鈥 Advanced Life Support certification
  • 鈥 GMC registered to practice
Desirable criteria
  • 鈥 Postgraduate qualifications or diplomas

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completion of Foundation year 2.
  • Previous experience of working in the NHS as a doctor.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in one of the following specialities: 鈥 Respiratory Medicine or other medical specialities at FY2 or higher level 鈥 Intensive Care medicine 鈥 Emergency medicine 鈥 Surgical specialities
  • Post registration experience working in other specialties relevant to the role. Provider status in one of the following: ALS, ATLS
