Main duties of the job
Since March 2024, we have transitioned to a nine-consultant rota to ensure compliance with CNST recommendations. Currently, the team comprises 8.0 WTE substantive consultants and one locum consultant. This substantive post is intended to replace the locum position.
The appointed consultant will join an established team of eight neonatologists at the Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit, Medway Maritime Hospital. As a fully accredited tertiary neonatal referral centre, the unit is supported by a comprehensive multidisciplinary team and operates within the Kent, Surrey, and Sussex (KSS) Operational Delivery Network.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The new consultant will have leadership responsibility to progress governance within the neonatal department, and a clinical neonatal sub-speciality interest which would complement those areas already covered by the current consultants.
An interest in neonatal respiratory conditions will be a welcome addition to the existing expertise within the team. The post holder will lead clinically on all aspects of infant and neonatal respiratory conditions.
This includes supporting the development of clinical guidelines in neonatal respiratory care and introducing a care bundle to reduce BPD in preterm babies.
All consultants are actively involved in research projects that are undertaken on the unit. Educational supervision of junior doctors/ANNP is shared between consultants.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration
- Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health or equivalent
- Specialist Registration in Neonatology or Paediatrics with a Special Interest in Neonatology (or will obtain within 6 months of interview date)
- IELTS (Academic) level 7.5, or graduate of a Medical School in UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, USA or Canada
- At least 2 years training in years ST6-8 in a UK neonatal intensive care unit, or equivalent overseas if recognised for OOP
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Clinical Governance principles
- NLS provider
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
Desirable criteria
- Research Experience: Publication, International presentation and Research Work
- Good understanding of the impact of Respiratory Care bundle in neonatal outcomes
Experience
Essential criteria
- At least 2 years training in years ST6-8 in a UK neonatal intensive care unit, or equivalent overseas if recognised for OOP
- Evidence of advanced clinical skills in neonatal medicine
