Job overview
The post holder will join a team of consultants, a specialist registrar, specialty doctors and advanced nurse practitioners and will contribute to donor care. We provide an essential service for NHS Wales in ensuring that it has access to blood to support the treatment of patients, in support of the transplant programmes and in the work of the Welsh Bone Marrow Donor Registry. The range of services we deliver are broad, multifaceted and highly specialised, underpinned by a clear commitment to continue to improve, to provide excellent services and to promote health and wellbeing for the people of Wales and beyond.
The post holder will participate in the consultant 24-hour on call rota (pro-rata, approximately 1 in 5 for a whole time equivalent).听
Medical posts within the Welsh Blood Service are accountable to the Medical Director.
This is a 6-month fixed term locum contract due to service needs.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
As a Donor Medicine Consultant working in close partnership with senior nursing colleagues and operational managers to ensure clinical standards are met and to develop improved national policies and procedures for collecting blood. Always being an advocate for donors by ensuring their best interests are considered as new policies evolve.
Making an active contribution to the safety of donors, patients and the continuing process of updating and improving donor selection methods and criteria. This includes research, systematic review and the production of guidelines by which practice is regulated. All of these activities are supported both within the WBS structure and by the UK wide machinery of JPAC.
Representing the Blood Donation Clinical Team on national committees, operational and project management teams and ad hoc working groups, as required by the Medical Director.
Leading the Clinical Nurse Specialist staff to provide assessment of donors.听
Maintaining appropriate records relevant to the clinical care and selection of donors.听
Investigating and responding to donor complaints and quality incidents; reporting donor adverse events and ensuring all donors are followed up appropriately
Participate actively in Clinical Governance and provide cross cover reciprocally with colleagues caring for donors and patients at the WBS.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview
- Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
- Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
- MRCP and FRCPath or equivalents

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
