Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a Chief Pharmacist at Frimley NHS Trust, a unique chance to lead, innovate, and make a real impact.

In this pivotal role, you’ll provide strategic leadership for pharmacy services, act as the Superintendent Pharmacist, and deliver expert medicines management advice to the Chief Executive and Board. You’ll drive progressive strategies, optimise medicines use across the local health economy, and advance electronic prescribing for improved patient safety.

Main duties of the job

KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide professional leadership for pharmacy services, fulfilling the statutory and ethical requirements of the Superintendent Pharmacist role as defined by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Be accountable for the delivery of pharmacy services aligned with the Trust’s strategic direction, ensuring they are patient-focused, safe, efficient, and responsive to internal and external demands.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for pharmacy services and oversee clinical governance, including risk management.
  • Provide specialist expertise and governance to the Chief Executive, with corporate responsibility for all aspects of medicines management, including NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA) standards, CQC requirements, and Department of Health (DH) performance frameworks.
  • Foster staff behaviours aligned with Trust values and promote collaborative, patient-centred care.
  • Ensure the safe and cost-effective use of medicines across the health economy, working with primary and community partners.
  • Provide innovative leadership within the Trust and the wider ICS, supporting research and service development.
  • Oversee audits of pharmacy services and coordinate research and development in medicines management.
  • Take corporate accountability for the safety and effectiveness of the electronic prescribing system and contribute to national discussions on the development and delivery of pharmacy services.

Essential criteria
  • Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (MRPharmS)
  • Master’s degree in Pharmacy (MPharm) or equivalent
  • Postgraduate clinical qualification and evidence of CPD

Experience

  • • Extensive senior-level NHS pharmacy experience.
  • • Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership abilities, with a proven capacity to lead, inspire, and manage service change and staff.
  • • Skilled at working across boundaries and making effective, prompt decisions in complex and variable situations.
  • • Adept at identifying and implementing the potential of information technology to enhance services.
  • • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
  • • Effective in influencing, negotiating, and motivating others to achieve goals.
